Dakar, Senegal
It's historic. For the first time, the African continent is hosting an Olympic event: the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Dakar. From October 31 to November 13, 2026, Senegal will be the center of the sports world.
For international visitors, Dakar is a vibrant city, but the technological landscape is different from Europe or the USA.
The Connectivity Challenge: Orange vs Free
Senegal has good infrastructure, but it will be put to the test.
- The Sites: Diamniadio (the new stadium), Dakar center, and Saly (seaside resort). The distances are significant.
- Costly Roaming: Senegal is outside the "World" plans of many European operators. The price per MB can be astronomical.
Technical Analysis: 4G+ and 5G
Orange Senegal has launched 5G, but coverage is concentrated on Dakar Plateau and Almadies.
- eSIM vs Street Vendors: Buying a SIM card on the street ("Orange Money") is possible, but requires identification with a passport which can take time. eSIM is instant.
The Alolilo Advice: Peace of Mind
- Senegal eSIM: Buy it before you leave. You'll have data as soon as you land at AIBD (new airport).
- WhatsApp: It's the universal communication tool in Senegal. Everyone uses it, from taxis to restaurants.
- GPS: Traffic in Dakar can be dense. Having Waze or Google Maps to guide your driver is very useful.
Teranga! (Welcome). Enjoy Senegalese hospitality without worrying about your bill.
